SsangYong’s Tivoli has rapidly become the top seller for South Korea’s oldest vehicle-maker, and to help it compete with larger cars such as the Nissan Qashqai, there is now an extended version with more luggage space. Overall, this is a likeable, keenly priced and practical car, which can be specced up to be as plain or as fancy as you like with the firm’s My Tivoli programme. It’s a hit for SsangYong, and it deserves to be. Subaru, for all its current warts, built a whole brand on similar foundations.

Now, we’ve tried the cheapest ELX model in manual, front-wheel drive form. • Best MPVs and people carriers We suspected that this model would be the one to have and our drive on UK roads has confirmed it.
That Merc-derived engine remains the highlight of the dynamic experience, delivering decent urge and driving smoothly via the standard five-speed autobox and accompanied by a gravelly resonance in the cabin. Power is from a 113hp 1.6-litre diesel engine working through a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, there is a choice of two or four-wheel-drive and there is a five-year unlimited mileage warranty. Despite being ditched elsewhere in the segment, low-range gearing remains a standard feature. The automatic version suffers from a slow-witted, irritating gearbox and in 4×4 form it can only manage 44.8mpg. Retrieved 17 July 2016. ^ «Ssangyong Tivoli to debut at Shanghai auto show».
